Introduction. A nagging thought of a scholar
2019
This paper is – as introduction of volume “Proximity violence in migration times” – is the result of the nagging thought of a scholar and the support the European Commission decided to provide her with in order to favour the theoretical challenge the project envisaged and allowing her to conduct these two years of research supported by a network of partners comprising universities, research centres and non-profit organisations. It is the product of a combined, reasoned in-the-field research and desk analysis regarding recognition and reception of refugee-asylum seekers, victims of violence within their places of origin, during the journey to the European states bordering on the Mediterranea…
The EU’s legislative framework and the issue of violence perpetrated against migrant women
2019
Following the traces of the introductory section of this book, the present chapter focus on the emerge intersection of the phenomena of violence and migration, through the chronological evolution of the European legal framework on the subject. As previously remarked, the western society in the last century brought up into the public attention a shared concern on the issue violence (Warr 1994), that has expanded through time (Gelles & Straus 1979). At an initial phase, the phenomenon has been mostly characterised by the gender aspect, there is, the association of violence to an asymmetric distribution of power between the genders (Bourdieu 1998). It is exactly on the asymmetric distribut…
Proximity Violence in Migration Times. A Focus in some Regions of Italy, France and Spain
2019

Systems of protecti…

Manifold instances of proximity violence and proximity vulnerability of the migrant women
2020
Over the past few decades and up until 2017, Sicily has hosted increasing numbers of African fugitives into the European Union. Within this markedly multicultural context, the authors carried out a two-part qualitative research project, the first part consisting in participative observation of a number of sub-Saharan women hosted by some of the island’s refugee reception centres, victims of abuse, followed by a set of semi-structured interviews administered to them. The aim of the paper was to analyse some of the role positions found in gender dynamics among migrants, throwing light on possible processes by which mechanisms of submission to and normalisation of gender violence seem to have …

Meticciamento regressivo: donne migranti e donne palermitane
2020
2020
Today, the identification of migrants with asylum seekers and the overestimation of inflows – also referred to as the “refugee crisis” – has meant that Italy, as a politically strategic borderland of Europe, coincides with a battleground between sovereign drives and solidarity tensions. If refugees are the most visible object of political contention, governance operated by Ngo’s and, more generally, by civil society, sees women in the front row in a battle aimed at re-humanizing politics. The clash, which lasted for weeks between Captain Rackete of Sea Watch 3 and Minister Salvini, did not only represent a confrontation between reception policies and rejection policies, between the dehumani…
